Description: St. Augustine Church, founded in 1796, was the first permanent U.S. establishment of the Augustine Order. It is the birthplace of the Philadelphia Police Department and the Philadelphia Orchestra.  This Catholic church, the spiritual home of many European immigrants, was rebuilt in 1847 after rioters torched its predecessor.
